The territory

This project aims to share the experience of a great part of the MEDOCC territory: Spain (València, Catalunya, Murcia and Illes Balears), Italy (Sardegna and Sicilia), France (Alps-Provence-Côte d’Azur), Greece (Crete), and Tunisia.

Therefore, the project includes four of the most extensive West Mediterranean islands (Sicilia, Sardegna, Crete and Balears), often known as “hot spots” of biodiversity. On these islands, evolutive characteristics of the flora have caused the appearance of a great number of high biological value endemisms. These islands are strongly dependent on tourism, which has not always been respectful ot their natural inheritance.

The participation of Tunisia as an active partner in the project opens the door to internacional cooperation enrichment with a country from the South Mediterranean Region. In this sense, GENMEDOC contributes to the Barcelona Process, which aims to integrate the European regions and other Mediterranean countries. Tunisia also offers the project its experience on species adapted to dry environmental conditions, as in some MEDOCC regions where desert areas are increasing.

Within the involved territories, field work is located in SCIs (Sites of Community Interest), spaces proposed as a starting point for the ecological net NATURA 2000. LICs contain habitats with communities of high ecological value, especially those which are rare and threatened, which the Habitats Directive has defined as a priority when compelling European countries to guarantee their conservation.
