GENMEDOC is not only a scientific project, but a project
with numerous social, political and, especially, environmental
repercussions.
- By inducing the training and employment of young technicians
(with an important feminine presence) and through contracts
and stages, new positions in the European Community have
been created. The participation of three universities and
five biodiversity conservation centres constitutes a qualified
operative core which enables the creation of a solid base
to avoid an exodus of the new work forces from the region.
- The development of conservation strategies for genetic
resources and the establishment of seed banks for autochthonous
flora are recent developments in the Mediterranean area.
The newly-created network and the cooperation between institutions
from different regions in the MEDOCC area make possible
the adoption of common methodologies previously inexistent,
and have permitted (and continue to permit) the exchange
of information. The result of this collaboration should
be the development of coherent common directives for the
entire Mediterranean basin and the adoption of territory
development policies respectful of biodiversity conservation.
- The indirect, but not less important, consequence of the
correct management of territory and natural heritage protection
is the development and consolidation of a kind of rural
tourism respectful of biodiversity (green tourism), thus
building up a diversified offer which will reduce tourist
pressure on the coast.
The diffusion of this project, including seminars, brochures
and a CD-Rom, brings and will bring plenty of useful information
for those involved in biodiversity management as well as
for the society in which we live (TV, press, radio, Internet).
