The international network for genetic resources conservation
of the Mediterranean flora, created by the project members,
encourages exchange of information, data, knowledge and
experience among partners in order to:
- reinforce “ex situ” conservation of Mediterranean
genetic resources in seed banks.
- contribute to the “in situ” conservation and
valuation of populations and taxa from the Mediterranean
flora.
The main goals are:
• To elaborate a common methodology for collection,
treatment and conservation of plant species in seed banks.
• To develop efficient germination protocols.
• To exchange information and experience among regions.
• To spread the results (Internet, seminars, brochures,
CD-ROM).
This network, integrated by centres specialized in autochthonous
mediterranean species conservation (universities, research
centres and administrations), aims to reinforce cooperation
among regional administrations responsible for territory
management. These administrations are often lacking in specific
services on biodiversity conservation.
The Project Coordinator (forest seed bank of CIEF in the
Regional Government of València), is an institution
strongly connected with territory management and, specifically,
forest management. Among its functions we should highlight:
the provision of reproductive materials for reforestation,
the coordination of public nurseries, and the making available
of innovative criteria on habitats restoration and forest
management. For these reasons, it provides the other partners
with a practical perspective and its own experience to ensure
continuity as regards territory management.
The final objective of the project is to provide
elements for the construction and development of the ecological
net NATURA 2000, thanks to an important interregional integration.
